Last July, the Regional Directorate for Maritime Policy, in close partnership with the Pico Environment and Climate Action Service, was in the field monitoring colonies of Cory\u2019s Shearwaters (Calonectris borealis<\/em>) as part of the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project.<\/p>\n

The locations chosen for monitoring were Mist\u00e9rio da Prainha and Cria\u00e7\u00e3o Velha, on the island of Pico, with the following results:<\/p>\n

Mist\u00e9rio da Prainha<\/strong><\/p>\n

_ Nests monitored: 64<\/p>\n

_ Occupancy in June: 47 nests<\/p>\n

_ Occupancy in July: 22 nests<\/p>\n

Cria\u00e7\u00e3o Velha:<\/strong><\/p>\n

_ Nests monitored: 69<\/p>\n

_ Occupancy in June: 54<\/p>\n

_ Occupancy in July: 43<\/p>\n

This data is essential for assessing the reproductive success of Cory\u2019s Shearwaters and identifying potential threats to their conservation, such as predation by introduced species.<\/p>\n

Monitoring work will continue in the coming months, with new field trips aimed at deepening knowledge of the species\u2019 reproduction in both locations and strengthening protection and risk mitigation strategies for this emblematic species of the Azores archipelago.<\/p>\n
