The LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, continues to invest in the active conservation of Ribeira da Lomba, on the island of Faial, through actions C3.2 – “In-situ conservation of terrestrial flora” and C4.1 – “Conservation of terrestrial habitats”.

Recently, the project team planted 42 specimens of native Azorean species, contributing to the ecological recovery of this vital riverside ecosystem:

  • 11 Frangula azorica (Azorean Buckthorn)
  • 11 Ilex perado ssp. azorica (Azorean Holly)
  • 20 Euphorbia stygiana (Azorean Spurge)

This intervention continues the work of controlling invasive alien species, with particular attention to Hydrangea macrophylla (Hydrangea), which has been systematically removed from this area over the last few years.

The aim is to promote natural regeneration and restructure the habitat with native species that play a key role in the ecological stability of that location.

These actions strengthen the populations of the project’s target species and contribute to improving the conservation status of natural habitats, increasing the ecological resilience of Ribeira da Lomba.
