As part of the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project, ecological restoration actions have been carried out on the island of Faial, continuing the planting of endemic species and reinforcing priority areas for nature conservation. These interventions have been carried out by the Faial Environment and Climate Action Service and fall under actions C4.1 – Good practices for the conservation of terrestrial habitats and C3.2 – Implementation of pilot conservation works for the conservation of endemic flora – in situ conservation.
The most recent planting took place in early January, with eight Azorean Holly trees (Ilex perado ssp. azorica), 50 Azorean Buckthorns (Frangula azorica), 11 Azorean Cherry trees (Prunus azorica), and 80 Azorean Laurel trees (Laurus azorica) planted.
To date, a total of 68 Azorean Holly trees and 87 Azorean Buckthorns have been planted in the Caldeira do Faial intervention area and 49 Azorean Buckthorns, 120 Azorean Laurel trees, 11 Azorean Cherry trees and 12 Azorean Holly trees in Charcos de Pedro Miguel.
These actions contribute significantly to the recovery of natural habitats and the conservation of the Azores’ endemic flora.
