Several specimens of Azorean Bellflower (Azorina vidalii) — one of the most emblematic endemic plants of the Azores — were planted on Avenida do Mar, in Ponta Delgada. The initiative was promoted by 24 students from the Environmental and Rural Tourism Course of the Professional School EPROSEC (Professional School of the Office and Commerce Union of the Autonomous Region of the Azores), with plants provided by the São Miguel Environment and Climate Action Service, produced in the Pomar das Furnas.
The activity was aligned with the work developed by the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project in promoting the use and conservation of native and endemic species in Azorean public spaces. This hands-on moment contributed to reinforcing the students’ awareness of the importance of preserving the Archipelago’s natural heritage.
The planting of Azorina vidalii constitutes a significant contribution to the conservation of the species, also contributing to the landscape enhancement of Avenida do Mar through the use of endemic flora of the region.
This action highlights the collaboration between LIFE IP AZORES NATURA, the Environment and Climate Action Service, and local entities in promoting biodiversity, training young people, and raising awareness about the importance of using endemic plants in the ornamentation of urban spaces.
With the financial support of the LIFE Programme of the European Union.
