The project managers, Diana Pereira and João Fernandes, of the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, took part in EU Green Week 2026 – Investing in a Nature-Positive Economy, which took place on 3 and 4 June in Brussels.

This participation is in line with the project’s objectives, particularly within the scope of Action E2 – Dissemination, transferability and replicability of innovative and demonstrative actions.

Throughout the sessions, it was demonstrated that investing in nature is not a cost but a strategic investment in the future.

Ecosystems provide essential services that sustain the economy, health and quality of life, ranging from climate regulation and the protection of water resources to the preservation of biodiversity and the strengthening of regional resilience.

It was also emphasised that the transition to a more sustainable society requires a collective effort, with the private sector’s involvement being crucial. Businesses and investors play a key role in valuing natural capital by integrating nature into their decision-making and recognising the value of the services it provides.

In the section dedicated to the Natura 2000 network, six European sites were highlighted, including the Mistérios Negros on the island of Terceira, highlighting the recognition of the Azores’ high natural value at a European level.

The importance of continuing the LIFE Programme as a key instrument for supporting nature conservation, ecological restoration and climate change adaptation projects was also emphasised; over the past few decades, this programme has generated significant environmental, social and economic benefits.

Among the sessions of greatest relevance to the Azores, the following stood out:

  • Show me the Model – Nature: the Business Case;
  • Nature Credits;
  • Soil: Fertile Ground for Innovation – From Sky to Microbes;
  • The keynote speech by Louis de Jaeger, who stressed the importance of soil conservation as the foundation of ecosystems and sustainability.
