DiscoverEU celebrates 40 years of Schengen with 40,000 travel passes for young explorers

To mark the 40th anniversary of the Schengen Area, the European Commission will offer 40,000 free travel passes to young people through the DiscoverEU initiative, part of the Erasmus+ programme.
Young people born between 1 January and 31 December 2007 can apply by completing a short quiz about the European Union on the European Youth Portal. Selected participants will be able to travel for free for up to 30 days between 1 March 2026 and 31 May 2027, and will receive a discount card for transport, accommodation, culture, and other activities in 36 countries.
Participants can design their own travel itineraries or follow inspiring routes such as the New European Bauhaus Route and the DiscoverEU Green Route, which highlight sustainable destinations, cities awarded for ecological innovation, and locations aligned with the EU’s climate transition goals.
Applications are open from 30 October to 13 Novembesr 2025 and are available to young people from the European Union and third countries associated with Erasmus+. The programme also provides tailored support for participants with disabilities or health issues, in line with the DiscoverEU Inclusion initiative.
