The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), under Horizon Europe, Europe’s largest research program, has launched a new call for proposals to create its tenth Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC): EIT Water. This new innovation community will focus on the water, marine, and maritime sectors and ecosystems, addressing major challenges such as water scarcity, droughts, flooding, and the degradation of marine and freshwater ecosystems. With this call, the EIT invites universities, research institutes, and businesses to present their vision and strategy for the new KIC.

EIT KICs are large-scale pan-European partnerships that bring together educational institutions, research organizations, and businesses to create a portfolio of innovative products and services. They receive funding from the EIT for a maximum period of fifteen years. EIT Water can expect an initial budget of up to 5 million euros by 2026.

EIT Water will join the nine existing EIT KICs, which are active in the fields of climate, digital, energy, health, raw materials, food, manufacturing, urban mobility, and culture and creativity. To date, the EIT and its KICs have trained over 800,000 individuals in innovation, entrepreneurship, and deep technologies, launched thousands of new products and services to market, and supported over 10,000 businesses that have raised nearly 10 billion euros in public and private funding, representing 72 billion euros.
