Escola Básica Integrada da Maia took part in a biodiversity marathon through the Bioblitz in the Field activity, part of the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action.

The initiative involved students, teachers and environmental technicians in an educational journey dedicated to discovering the natural wealth surrounding us. The students could photograph, identify, georeference and record the species observed in the natural environment using the Biodiversity4all mobile app, an accessible tool that makes it easier to observe and record biodiversity.

But what is a Bioblitz anyway? It’s an intensive, collaborative action where citizens and experts come together to observe and catalogue as many species as possible in a short period and a specific geographical area. This citizen science initiative contributes to building scientific knowledge and a greater understanding of the biodiversity of the Azores.

During the activity, various species – native, endemic and invasive – were recorded, contributing to mapping local flora and fauna and furthering knowledge of the Region’s biodiversity.
