The LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, was present at the 6th FloraMac International Symposium, which took place in Angra do Heroísmo, on the island of Terceira, in September 2025.
During the event, the project manager presented a paper entitled ‘Reinforcement of Protected Plant Species under LIFE IP AZORES NATURA: A contribution to ecological conservation and restoration in the Azores’, highlighting the project’s contribution to the conservation and ecological restoration of the Azores’ endemic flora.
One of the main objectives of LIFE IP AZORES NATURA is to strengthen the populations of protected species, promoting the conservation of endemic flora, the restoration of natural habitats and the improvement of the conservation status of priority species.
Among the results achieved so far, the following stand out:
- Identification of 102 new populations, covering 19 target species, on all islands of the Archipelago;
- Collection of approximately 156 kg of seeds from woody and herbaceous species;
- Planting of 44,056 individuals since the start of the project.
FloraMac is an international symposium that brings together experts in taxonomy, vegetation ecology, biogeography, phylogeography, palaeoecology and biodiversity conservation, focusing on the terrestrial and marine flora and vegetation of Macaronesia (Azores, Madeira, Selvagens, Canary Islands and Cape Verde).
The participation of LIFE IP AZORES NATURA in this event reinforces the Azores’ commitment to the active conservation of endemic flora and natural habitats, promoting scientific exchange and the sharing of good practices on an international scale.
