The LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project participated in the 2nd PT Webinar of the LIFE COOP Cortaderia project, sharing the actions we have been developing in the Azores to combat Cortaderia selloana (pampas grass), within the scope of the Transnational Strategy against this invasive species.
Main actions carried out by the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project in the Azores to combat and raise awareness about this invasive species:
- Awareness campaigns and distribution of information materials on all islands.
- Training sessions on invasive alien species.
- Inclusion of Cortaderia selloana in the educational game ‘Dobble Invasoras’.
- Mapping and early detection through the REGAEI app and the iNaturalist/Biodiversity4All platform.
- Control and ecological restoration actions, with emphasis on the removal of the species in Lagoa do Fogo and its replacement with native species.
The growing involvement of local authorities underscores the importance of collaboration in protecting the Azores’ natural heritage.
We would also like to thank the @LIFE COOP Cortaderia project for the opportunity to collaborate with various projects and entities that daily address the problem of alien and invasive species.
