As part of Action E4 – Environmental Education Programme, the Environment and Climate Action Service of Santa Maria is promoting a series of activities included in the Blue Flag Programme, which this year has the theme ‘Habitat Restoration’.
Among the initiatives in the spotlight is a presentation at House of Fossils // Dalberto Pombo Environmental Interpretation Centre, dedicated to the work carried out by LIFE projects on the island of Santa Maria, with a special focus on habitat restoration.
Since 2019, the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project has been implementing various actions on Santa Maria, with visible results, namely:
– The recovery of habitats on Ilhéu da Vila, to protect the seabirds that nest there;
– Interventions at Ponta do Castelo, which promote the conservation and propagation of protected endemic flora, such as Lotus azoricus.
These initiatives reinforce the ongoing commitment to nature conservation and raising community awareness of the importance of protecting local ecosystems.
