As part of action C4.1 – Good practices for the conservation of terrestrial habitats, the Corvo Environment and Climate Action Service team is continuing its work to install fencing in the Caldeirão and Trevo areas, with the installation of more than 1 km of fencing.
The aim is to delimit these areas to promote the natural regeneration of native and endemic species, contributing to the recovery of existing natural habitats.
It should be noted that the entire Caldeirão area also provides an essential environmental service, as Corvo’s artificial lagoons are fed by rainwater, water accumulated in the thick tufts of Sphagnum sp. (peat moss) on the north-facing slopes, and condensation from atmospheric moisture.
Therefore, the installation of fencing to prevent livestock from accessing these areas is also essential to improve the conservation status of peatland habitats and ensure water supply to the population.
