The presence of the invasive species Pueraria montana (known as kudzu) was recently recorded for the first time on the island of Terceira by the citizen science platform iNaturalist (Biodiversity4All). This species had already been detected in the Region, on the island of São Miguel, where the site is being monitored.

Following this new record, the operational teams from Terceira Environment and Climate Action Service immediately travelled to the site, confirmed the invasion and proceeded to completely remove the plant.

The site will now be monitored on an ongoing basis to detect any resurgences, while maintaining an active watch for any new outbreaks that may appear on Terceira island.

This action demonstrates the importance of early detection and rapid response, crucial factors in halting the spread of invasive species, which can have significant ecological, economic and social impacts.

The citizen science platform thus plays a fundamental role in the success of these interventions. It is a clear example of how we can all contribute to protecting the Azores’ biodiversity.

This intervention is part of the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project and its actions:

– C8.1 – Control and eradication of invasive alien species in restored habitats

– C11 – Pilot project for prevention and rapid response to invasive alien species

– E5 – Public Involvement and Volunteer Programme
