As part of action C3.2 ‘In situ conservation’ of the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project, a population reinforcement of native plants was carried out on the island of Pico, in the areas of Caveiro and Pico da Urze, in partnership with the Pico Environment and Climate Action Service (SAAC).
In total, more than 300 individuals belonging to five different native species were introduced: Scabiosa nitens, Tolpis azorica, Angelica lignescens, Lactuca watsoniana and Calluna vulgaris. The seeds that originated these plants were collected on the island of Pico from existing populations in the respective areas and were subsequently delivered to the Faial Botanic Garden nursery, where they were germinated.
Monitoring the success of this intervention will now be the responsibility of the SAAC of Pico.
