The LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, installed signage along the pedestrian trails of Monte and Mistério da Prainha, on Pico island, to alert visitors to the presence of a Cory’s Shearwater nesting area.

This action, developed within the scope of LIFE IP AZORES NATURA, involved the collaboration of the Pico Environment and Climate Action Service and the Regional Directorate for Maritime Policies. The Cory’s Shearwater (Calonectris borealis) is one of the target species of the project, which aims to promote the conservation of biodiversity and natural habitats in the Azores.

The Cory’s Shearwaters use these areas to nest and, during this sensitive phase, the broods mustn’t be removed from their nests. Often, when observed alone, they may appear abandoned; however, the parents later return to feed them.

All hikers and visitors are urged to respect existing signage, stay on the marked trails, and help preserve the biodiversity of Pico island. With the financial support of the LIFE Programme of the European Union.
