The Madalena Elementary and Secondary School on Pico hosted a session dedicated to the importance of peatlands in maintaining wetlands, as part of the awareness-raising activities of the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project.

The activity included a hands-on component, during which students built a mini-peat bog using simple materials to simulate how these ecosystems function and demonstrate their role in retaining and gradually releasing water, regulating the water cycle, and preventing floods and landslides. The initiative was organised in collaboration with the Pico Environment and Climate Action Service and involved 34 students, three teachers, and two park rangers.
