The European Commission is inviting applications for the European Capitals of Tourism Award 2027, calling on tourist destinations across Europe to present their most innovative and sustainable tourism initiatives that position them as leading examples in this field.

The European Commission will award two destinations that demonstrate excellence in two categories. The first category is open to destinations with more than 100,000 inhabitants and recognises excellence in sustainability, accessibility, digitalisation, cultural heritage and creativity. The second category is open to destinations with between 25,000 and 100,000 inhabitants and recognises smaller destinations that are at the forefront of sustainable tourism.

Tourism is one of the EU’s largest economic sectors, playing a fundamental role in economic growth and job creation. It contributes to regional development, supports small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and helps preserve cultural heritage. At the same time, the tourism sector faces significant challenges, including geopolitical instability, climate change, skills shortages and overcrowding in major tourist centres. The European Capitals of Tourism initiative recognises and celebrates destinations that implement innovative solutions in areas such as digitalisation, accessibility and sustainability, as well as in supporting cultural heritage, creativity and local talent.

Applications for the European Capitals of Tourism Award 2027 are open until 12 June at 4:00 p.m. (mainland Portugal time).
