Over the past few weeks, the team from the Environment and Climate Action Service on the island of Faial has carried out a population restoration programme for the Azorean Spurge (Euphorbia stygiana) and the Azores Bellflower (Azorina vidalii), species endemic to the Azores and protected under the Habitats Directive. New plants were planted along the banks of the Ribeira das Águas Claras, at Monte da Guia, Morro de Castelo Branco and also at the Castelo Branco Harbour, contributing to the recovery of these species, which are in an unfavourable conservation status.
The initiative, carried out by Park Rangers and operational staff from the Faial Environment and Climate Action Service, forms part of the ongoing effort to restore habitats and conserve priority species on the island. This initiative joins other planting projects carried out throughout the year, helping to increase the resilience of local populations, promote habitat regeneration and protect the native biodiversity of the Archipelago.
