Ecology Day emerged as a celebration of the 150th anniversary of Ecology in 2016, marked with a roundtable at the European Parliament in Brussels.
Celebrated between September 13th and 17th, this day intends to bring this science and ecologists closer to the general community, with the objective of promoting and raising awareness for a more sustainable development.
Since 2017, this event’s promotion has been under the responsibility of SPECO – Portuguese Society of Ecology, in association with the European Ecology Federation (EEF). In 2019, two years later, this day took on an international scale, thanks to the celebrations which took place in the United States of America, Russia, India and Mozambique.
LIFE IP AZORES NATURA project celebrated this date by carrying out a weeds’ removal action at Lagoa do Fogo in São Miguel, one of the project’s intervention areas, with the contribution of Terra Jovem Project.
With this initiative, it was possible to remove invasive exotic species that threatened this area, namely 𝘏𝘦𝘥𝘺𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘶𝘮 𝘨𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘮 (Conteira) and 𝘓𝘦𝘺𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘢 (Silva-mansa).
