The LIFE IP AZORES NATURA, of which the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change is the coordinating beneficiary, has reinforced a population of the endemic 𝘈𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘢 𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘴. The reinforcement was made at the beginning of April at the top of the Caldeira do Faial with seeds from specimens that occur naturally on the island and were propagated on the Azores Seed Bank.
With the help of the Faial Environment and Climate Change Service (SAACF) it was possible to plant 71 specimens of this species in three different places. It is hard to access the planting area and to get there, the SAACF team made four trips, in a total of 12 kilometres, carrying the plants through the circular trail of the Caldeira’s perimeter.
During one of the exploration trips that are being carried out as part of the conservation action C3.2 – In-situ conservation – of the LIFE IP AZORES NATURA, a new outbreak of 𝘈𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘢 𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘴 was found on the slope of Caldeira. Two more reinforcement actions are planned for the next months with a total of 188 specimens.
